Hardwired Intercoms

The best practise wherever possible is to hardwire voice intercoms from the gate entrance back to the dwelling, (definitely for voice and vision versions)

This may or may not require extensive ground works such as a service trench(s), appropriate ducting and a degree of internal cable routing.

Power cable and control cable can be specified as ‘self bury cable’ and therefore can be buried to a save depth (minimum guide 450mm deep).

If utilising ducting use draw cords and allow for draw chambers for longer awkward routes.

It is best practise to run power and control cables in separate ducts to avoid interference of the signal.

Consideration for positioning the internal handset or monitor in the house is important as some models of intercom may require a power source close by.

It may be possible to install a Telephone Interface Kit so that the calls from the entrance can be answer from house phone.

NB: A word of caution her as some Telephone Interface Kits only work on an ‘analogue’ phone line, if you have ‘broadband’ check first.

We have good success by installing a Telephone Interface Kit to link with stand alone cordless DECT phones.

At the gate entrance think about your preferences and options.

  • Do you want a flush fit or surface mounted panel?
  • Does the front panel need to be vandal resistant?
  • Can be it be fitted to a post set back to allow for drivers to lean out and speak?
  • Do you want an integral codepad or swipe tag facility?
  • Do you want voice only or voice/vision?
  • If voice/vision do you prefer a colour monitor or monochrome?
